How I Would Design A Coastal Home

Coastal interiors can conjure images of 'beach this way' signs and one too many navy blue cushions. But designed in sympathy with the surrounding areas, coastal interiors can be fresh, relaxing and most of all cozy.

Some of you may recall that I once owned a small beach house that I rented out on AirBnB. It was the first house I ever bought - and I loved all 700 sq.ft. of it, ultimately deciding to let it go to a new owner when we purchased the TLD Lakehouse where I live now. I loved that space, but I would do things a little differently if I still owned it today, taking heavy cues from Diane Keaton's home in the always classic Nancy Meyer's film, Something's Gotta Give.

My tips for a coastal home:

Natural materials: Using materials inspired by nature will be your ultimate friend when creating a timeless and fresh space. Think natural jute rugs, lightweight linens, solid wood furniture and stoneware.

Pattern: Be selective with the patterns and prints you use. Stripes are always a classic nautical print without feeling themed. Make it contemporary by using them in a big way, like a striped breakfast nook banquette or powder room drenched in striped wallpaper all around.

Curate A Theme: Although leaning too hard into the coastal aesthetic will age your space, being selective with items that nod to your surroundings will add your own personality. Why not collect sea glass into a stone bowl for your coffee table or curate a collection of handmade ceramics by local artisans. I love a framed vintage fish print.

It’s fascinating how everyone’s styles evolve with time and experience but that beach house you did will forever remain a masterclass in how to turn a small, somewhat frightening space 😅 into a bright, elevated, welcoming and sublime retreat. I will forever study it and remain inspired by it to this day!
